Black Sand Beach, Near Vik, Iceland

Frequently cloaked in dense fog and continually pounded by a restless surf, the black sand beaches of Iceland, particularly near the settlement of Vik on the southern coast, provide a stark, but beautiful landscape to appreciate for any visitor to Iceland.  As can be seen in this image, and especially dramatic, is the striking contrast of the coarse dark igneous pebbles with the delicate branches, succulent leaves, and subtle colors of the coastal plant known as Sea Bluebells (Mertensia maritima).
