Reykjavik, Iceland
Positioned on a small headland jutting into the bay of Reykjavík, Iceland and against the impressive backdrop of Mount Esja,, the iconic sculpture known as Sun Voyager (Icelandic: Sólfar) catches the rays of the setting sun, creating a dramatic play of light and shadow. Designed to be a part of the celebration to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the city of Reykjavík in 1990, it is constructed of quality stainless steel and stands on a circle of granite slabs. Though commonly thought to be a representation if a Viking ship, according to the sculptor Jón Gunnar Árnason, Sun Voyager is a dreamboat, an ode to the sun. In his words, it contains within itself the promise of undiscovered territory, a dream of hope, progress, and freedom.
